Do not contact the three nationwide
consumer reporting companies individually. They are only providing
free annual credit reports through
www.annualcreditreport.com
The FCRA
allows you to order one free copy from each of the nationwide
consumer reporting companies every 12 months.
Other
circumstances:
Under
federal law, you’re entitled to a free report if a company takes
adverse action against you, such as denying your application for
credit, insurance, or employment, and you
ask for your report within 60 days of receiving notice of the
action. The notice will give you the name, address, and phone number
of the consumer reporting company. You’re also entitled to one free
report a year if you’re unemployed and plan to look for a job within
60 days; if you’re on welfare; or if your report is inaccurate
because of fraud, including identity theft. Otherwise, a consumer
reporting company may charge you up to $9.50 for another copy of
your report within a 12-month period.
Other Free
Reports
Listed here are some other websites that allow
consumer to get free annual copies of reports covering insurance
claims, medical history and more. While it may not be worth it for
everyone to get all the reports, you should consider it if you're
shopping for insurance or suspect that your personal information has
been compromised somehow.
-
Insurance claims. ChoicePoint maintains the "Clue"
database tracking people's claim history both on
auto-insurance and personal-property policies. You can
order a copy of your file online at
www.choicetrust.com (click on "C.L.U.E. Reports" on
the left) or by calling 800-627-3487. A similar
report from the company ISA is available by calling
800-627-3487.
-
Medical history. When you apply for insurance, you
can authorize the insurer to get information about you
from the Medical Information Bureau at
www.mib.com.
Its database just uses codes to denote major conditions;
it's not your full medical records, like what your
doctor has. Generally you'll only have a record if
you've applied for individually underwritten life,
health, or disability insurance in the past seven years
(i.e. not a group plan through your employer). MIB
estimates that about 20% of people have a record. You
can get yours by calling 866-692-6901.
-
Background checks. landlords and employers often use
screening companies to do background checks. But there
are many companies that do it, so finding your
individual file is a long shot. ChoicePoint give you
toll-free numbers for its reports at
www.choicetrust.com.
